Improv Start

I did a major project last winter and these little snippets and actual small chunks are the cuts from that project.

I was using these fabrics for a quilt where I used Cultural Fusion Quilts book for instructions for the blocks. I'll post more about last winter's project at another time.

These little chunks were my start! I think that maybe they will become mini-quilts or table runners or you know, something fun anyway!

As you know I've had the last three weeks without stable Internet. For any blogger, this will cause stress, but to have to resign myself to finishing up my book in the new year is a real bummer! I have lots of fun to do with baking and preparing for Christmas and my upcoming retreat in January. I'm really looking forward to that!

This is the snippets I started with.

This is where I'm going, what do you think, is the black too black?

I'm linking up with Fret Not Yourself
and

and its C. -14 tonight and getting colder, winter has arrived!!

Thanks ladies for inviting me to participate with Improv Quilting!

  1. -14 is cold! The temp here, at 7.20 am is well above freezing (I guess I need to stop complaining about the cold!) I like your little scrappy blocks. The black is quite strong, but it can be hard to judge on a small sample and I would be inclined to keep on; once it's repeated often enough it will be okay and could be really striking. Hope your internet gets sorted properly

    1. HI Kaja, thanks for this insight, I personally love black and use it often, using some today on my sunset peice. I'm going to continue to make a bunch more of different sizes and I've already added in deep rich blue which another comment suggested.

  2. I started some of these with my leftovers, too. And then became discouraged when they got too large. You and Audrey at Quilty Folk have both created something great with these limited sizes. I'm going to try again.
The black does create a definite value change; sometimes these leftovers turn to mush with so many small bits of different values. Are you planning to use large pieces or small strips?
    Thanks for linking with AHIQ.

    1. I'm planning on keeping on with using up my little odd bits and see where this goes, I don't get too much into planning anything improv. I like to let it go whereever. Thanks for trying again, you never know where it goes, so keep on keeping on.

  3. Black looks workable. I like to try my pieces on various colors and compare effects. My current go-to is a rich blue. claire aka knitnkwilt.wordpress.com

  4. Visitng from Ad Hoc Improv Quilters #3 with Kaja. I'll eventually make the whole round, but I'm finding that I want to read more with every blog I visit. So it's taking a while. You and I are connected through Google+ so I've visited before, but it's been a while (sorry). I like the black but I think it's partly because some of the scrappy fabric has black in it and partly because I expect more improv blocks to come (so there will be less of the black showing). Like you, I like to let things work themselves out, but sometimes I get stuck and have to let it simmer a while. I guess that means go with it for now and see what happens.

  6. hi
I also had a bin of scraps, like yours, and finally decided it was time to deal with it. It was overflowing. So I made "crumb" blocks aka bonnie Hunter. They are 3 1/2" finished and with sashing and cornerstones put them together into 12"x!6" tops for placemats. So far I have made 16; they will be finished and donated through my guild to Meals on Wheels, LT Care, etc. I had a lot fun!!

    1. Hi there, I like that idea, I am so spontaneous, it gets boring for me, making fabric for larger pieces. Maybe I'm like ADD or something, buts its going well. Thanks for your continued support!

  7. Found my way here, finally! These improv blocks are lovely, and contrast well with the black. I suppose you will see whether it is the right choice when you have made more, and maybe auditioned a few different options to make a good choice. Seeing these blocks makes me think I should take out my scraps and see what I can do with them!

    1. Sandar, so good of you to pop over, I love making Improv Blocks, but it seems that the smaller they are, the more I like them. Absolutely, take out your scraps and get busy with Improv and then post it for me. Thanks for your support!
